Backyard Sheds Built
to a Commercial Standard.
Appalachian Architecture. Owner-Built.
Every Structure, Every Time.
Ed Shackelford spent 35+ years managing commercial construction before building his first backyard shed. That background — Army veteran, Construction Management degree, Civil Engineering discipline — shows up in how he designs, prices, and builds every structure. No subcontractors on structural work. No project managers between you and the person doing the job.
“The highest compliment a backyard structure can earn isn't admiration — it's the sense that it was always supposed to be there. That is what the Elite Series is built to achieve.” — What Greater Cincinnati homeowners tell us most.

Find the Backyard Build That Fits How You Actually Plan to Use It
Ed’s Backyard Builds are not presented as one generic shed category. Each structure is organized around the way the space will actually serve your property — premium storage, garden organization, workshop use, creative work, retreat space, guest-ready flexibility, or a more architectural backyard centerpiece.

Garden Buildings & Premium Storage
Start here if you need refined storage for tools, equipment, lawn care, garden supplies, seasonal items, or household overflow — but still want the structure to look finished, intentional, and matched to the property.

Large Storage & Utility Buildings
Choose this path when storage volume matters: lawn equipment, bikes, tools, firewood, seasonal décor, outdoor furniture, and larger household items that need organized, dry, easy-access space.

Backyard Studios & Creative Space
This path fits homeowners who want a warmer, more inviting backyard structure for creative work, music, video, reading, writing, hobbies, or a quiet space that feels separate from the house.

Workshops & Hobby Buildings
Start here if the structure needs to support real hands-on use: woodworking, repairs, crafts, equipment care, hobby work, or a more serious backyard shop with practical access and natural light.

Carriage Houses & Showpiece Structures
Choose this path when the backyard building will be highly visible and must become part of the property’s architecture — not just a functional outbuilding placed behind the house.

Bunkies, Retreats & Guest-Ready Space
This path fits homeowners who want a compact retreat-style building for quiet time, flexible use, future comfort upgrades, guest-ready potential, or a more cabin-like backyard escape.

Appalachian Elite Series · Ed's Backyard Builds
A Natural Extension of Your Home.
Built to the Standard Your Property Deserves.
Every Appalachian Elite structure begins with a roofline, a proportion, and window treatments drawn from the architectural traditions of the highland South. Steeply pitched gables, generous overhangs, and massing that reads as permanent rather than placed — the kind of backyard structure that looks designed for your property, not dropped onto it from a catalog.
What Makes It Different
Steeper, Taller Rooflines
More interior volume, better drainage, and a stronger visual presence than standard shed profiles.
Oversized Windows & Shutters
Natural light, cross-ventilation, and a finished appearance that elevates the whole structure.
Gable Vents & Extended Eaves
Year-round interior comfort and moisture control — engineered in, not added as an option.
Six Purpose-Built Configurations
Garden storage, workshop, office, studio, bunkie — one structural standard across every model.
Six models. Every use case. Explore the full Appalachian Elite series — design philosophy, structural specifications, and transparent pricing — without a sales call.

Scale Range
Ed's documentation and daily reporting gave ownership exactly what we needed to make decisions without guessing. He was steady on budget, schedule, and trust.
Our opening date was fixed and the project had no room for drift. Ed ran the job with the kind of sequencing and accountability that keeps a hard deadline realistic. We opened on time.
Over many years and across multiple projects, Ed proved he could carry the same standard from one job to the next without losing discipline. That consistency is what separates dependable builders.

Quick Answer
For homeowners who know the difference between a structure that was placed and one that was planned. The Appalachian Elite Series is the latter — built to look intentional, function without complaint, and hold its value on the property.
Why the Builder’s Judgment Matters
The difference is not one decorative feature. It is the full construction mindset behind the building — site placement, foundation judgment, roof proportion, water management, window placement, ventilation, and finish details all working together.
That is where Ed’s background matters. The same discipline used to manage demanding commercial construction work is applied here on a smaller, more personal scale: build it straight, protect it from moisture, make it useful, and make it look like it belongs.
Site Judgment First
Placement, access, slope, drainage, and visual fit are considered before the structure is treated as a product.
Permanent Visual Presence
Rooflines, windows, eaves, and proportions are selected to complement the property instead of looking dropped off.
Built for Real Use
Storage, workshop, office, studio, garden, and retreat layouts are planned around how homeowners actually live.
Owner-Led Accountability
You are not buying from a faceless shed lot. You are working with the builder whose name is behind the work.
Three people will form an opinion about your backyard structure: You, your guests, and anyone who sees it from the street. The Elite Series is designed to earn the same reaction from all three — that it was always meant to be there.

Common Questions · EdsBackyardBuilds.com
Protect Your Investment. Start With These Questions.
If you're doing your homework — good. These are the questions that separate a well-built Appalachian Elite structure from a box that looks fine on delivery day and tells a different story two winters later.
-
The difference is structural, not cosmetic. Every Appalachian Elite shed is built with a steeper-pitched roof for better drainage and more interior headroom, oversized windows paired with matched exterior shutters, gable vents and extended eaves for year-round interior comfort, and proportions drawn from highland Appalachian architectural tradition — not scaled from a generic warehouse template.
The result is a structure that reads as permanent rather than placed. It enhances your property rather than simply occupying a corner of it.
-
Every EdsBackyardBuilds structure uses 3/4" 7-ply pressure-treated plywood — never OSB. This is not an upgrade. It is the standard.
OSB absorbs moisture at the edges and degrades over time in an outdoor structure. Pressure-treated plywood resists moisture intrusion, holds fasteners more reliably, and performs across decades rather than years. If a builder offers OSB as their standard floor and charges to upgrade, that tells you something important about their baseline.
-
Ed and his sons Randall and Travis build every structural element themselves. Foundation, framing, roofing, siding, windows, and doors — no subcontractors for structural work. Ever.
Licensed trade partners handle electrical, HVAC, or plumbing when selected — but they are vetted and coordinated by Ed, and present on site when he is present. The person who quoted your job is the person who shows up with tools.
-
Permit requirements vary by municipality, structure size, and intended use. Permits are the homeowner's responsibility — we don't pull permits on your behalf, and we will not advise you to skip one that's required.
What we will do is tell you exactly what type of permit your structure is likely to require, which office to contact in your specific municipality, and what documentation you'll need for the application. We give you the roadmap. You file. We handle everything else.
-
All EdsBackyardBuilds structures are completed with exterior primer only — finish coats are not included in the standard build price. This is stated clearly in every proposal, not disclosed at handoff.
Important: All wood surfaces must be sealed within 30 days of completion or the structural warranty is voided. We will remind you of this at the completion walkthrough and tell you exactly what products to use. If you want us to coordinate a finish coat through a licensed painter, we can facilitate that as an add-on.
-
The 30-year structural warranty covers the integrity of the foundation system, framing, roof structure, and floor system against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use conditions.
It does not cover finish coat deterioration on surfaces left unsealed beyond 30 days, interior finishes, damage from improper use, or conditions outside the structure's designed tolerances. Dimensions carry a standard ±2" tolerance. The warranty is documented and delivered at the completion walkthrough — not buried in small print on a website.
-
A prefab shed is manufactured off-site, completed on a truck, and placed on your property. Every EdsBackyardBuilds structure is built on your site, by hand, to your site's specific conditions. Grade, drainage, access, and setbacks are assessed before a single board is cut.
The structural difference is significant: site-built construction allows for proper foundation leveling, custom framing to exact dimensions, and quality control at every stage that a factory line cannot replicate. You're not buying a product. You're commissioning a structure built for your specific property by a builder with 35+ years of commercial construction experience.
-
It's the right question, and it deserves a straight answer. EdsBackyardBuilds.com is a newer brand. Ed Shackelford is not a newer builder.
Ed brings 35+ years of commercial construction project executive experience, Construction Management education, Civil Engineering training, and U.S. Army veteran discipline to every structure. The professional references listed on this site are real people with real contact information.
A backyard shed is not the largest project Ed has built. It may be the most carefully built thing on your property.
How We Build · Ed's Backyard Builds
Commercial Discipline. Backyard Scale.
Six steps. Transparent pricing before any work begins. Ed and his sons on site for every structural element — no subcontractors, no unannounced strangers, no project managers between you and the builder. This is how every EdsBackyardBuilds structure gets built, from first conversation to final walkthrough.
Step 01
Your Inquiry & Initial Conversation
Call or text directly — you'll reach Ed, not a call center. We talk through what you're envisioning: the series, the size, the site, and your timeline. No pressure, no pitch. A straight conversation about whether we're the right fit for each other.
You speak with the builder from day one — not a salesperson.
Step 02
On-Site Visit & Site Assessment
Ed visits your property to assess the site — grade, access, drainage, setbacks, and any conditions that affect the foundation or build. What we find here shapes the proposal. There are no surprises later because we looked first.
Every site is different. We assess yours before we price it.
Step 03
Written Proposal & Transparent Pricing
You receive a detailed written proposal — series, configuration, all selected options, material specifications, and a complete price breakdown. No line items hidden in a lump sum. No allowances that expand later. What you see is what you pay.
Line-item transparency is not optional. It is how every proposal is written.
Step 04
Permits & Pre-Build Preparation
Permits are the homeowner's responsibility — we'll tell you exactly what to apply for and which office to contact in your municipality. We handle all pre-build coordination on our end: material ordering, scheduling, and site preparation sequencing.
We give you the permit roadmap. You file. We handle the rest.
Step 05
The Build — Ed & His Sons, On Site
Foundation, framing, roofing, siding, windows, doors — every structural element is built by Ed, Randall, and Travis. No subcontractors for structural work. Licensed trade partners handle electrical, HVAC, or plumbing if selected — coordinated and vetted by Ed, present when he's present.
The people who quoted your job are the people who build it.
Step 06
Completion Walkthrough & Final Sign-Off
Before we leave the site, we walk the completed structure with you — every detail, every finish, every system. You receive warranty documentation, care instructions, and a direct line to Ed for any follow-up questions. The structure is yours. The relationship does not end here.
All wood surfaces must be sealed within 30 days. We'll tell you exactly what to use and remind you before we leave.
