The 30-year structural warranty on every Ed’s Backyard Builds structure is not a marketing number selected to sound impressive. It reflects the build standard behind it — a structural assembly designed, specified, and built to perform for decades under normal use conditions in the Greater Cincinnati and Ohio Valley climate.
This page documents what the warranty covers, what it excludes, what activates it, what voids it, and how to use it if you ever need to. It also documents the material and structural specification behind it, because a warranty is only as good as the build standard it backs.

Covered and Not Covered —
Stated Plainly Before You Sign Anything.
The warranty covers structural integrity. It does not cover cosmetic deterioration, homeowner-caused damage, or conditions that arise from failure to perform required post-completion maintenance. Both sides of that line are stated here with equal clarity.
Covered by the 30-Year Structural Warranty
- Foundation system integrity — 6×6 YellaWood® pressure-treated grade beams, moisture barrier, and leveling system against defects in materials and workmanship.
- Floor system integrity — 2×6 pressure-treated joists, double center beam, and 3/4" 7-ply pressure-treated plywood subfloor against structural failure under normal use loads.
- Wall framing integrity — 2×6 kiln-dried studs, double top plate, and 1/2" pressure-treated wall sheathing against structural failure under normal conditions.
- Roof structure integrity — custom rafters or engineered trusses, hurricane ties, and 1/2" roof sheathing against structural failure under Ohio Valley weather loads.
- Window and door installation — proper installation against water infiltration at the rough opening under normal weather conditions.
- Workmanship defects — structural failure attributable to installation error or substandard workmanship identified within the warranty period.
Not Covered by the Structural Warranty
- Exterior finish deterioration on surfaces left unsealed beyond 30 days of structural completion. Sealing within 30 days is a warranty activation condition.
- Interior finishes — drywall, flooring, ceiling finish, interior trim, and interior caulking are not part of the standard build and are not covered by the structural warranty.
- Damage from improper use — floor loads exceeding the design specification, unauthorized structural modifications, misuse, abuse, or neglect.
- Weather events beyond design tolerance — tornado-force winds, direct lightning strikes, flooding, and other acts of nature are not covered by a workmanship warranty.
- Pest damage — while pressure-treated materials and engineered siding improve durability, pest infestations arising from site conditions are not covered.
- Cosmetic surface wear — normal weathering, UV fading, paint wear, and minor dimensional movement within normal site-built tolerance are expected and not warranty claims.
The Single Most Important Post-Completion Action
All Exterior Wood Surfaces Must Be Sealed Within 30 Days.
No Exceptions. This Activates the Warranty.
LP SmartSide® engineered wood siding is delivered primed and ready for finish coating. The 30-year structural warranty is conditional on all exterior wood surfaces being sealed — painted or stained — within 30 days of structural completion. This is not a fine-print condition buried in a warranty document. Ed states it verbally and in writing at the completion walkthrough and advises on appropriate products.
LP SmartSide® is designed to perform for decades when properly finished. Left unfinished, moisture can infiltrate at cut edges and joints — especially in an Ohio Valley climate with significant precipitation and freeze-thaw cycling. The 30-day window exists to prevent that failure mode before it starts.
Recommended products: premium exterior latex paint compatible with LP SmartSide® — Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior, Sherwin-Williams Duration, or equivalent. Minimum two finish coats over the factory primer. Ed will specify the appropriate sheen and application guidance at the completion walkthrough.

The Standard Behind the Warranty.
A 30-year warranty is only credible when the build standard behind it is stated with equal clarity. Every specification below applies across all six Ed’s Backyard Builds series. The series determines the configuration. The build standard remains consistent.
Foundation Beams
6×6 YellaWood® pressure-treated grade beams — the same type of specification used in serious deck and foundation construction. Not 4×4, not standard dimensional lumber passed off as foundation material.
Moisture Barrier
Full perimeter moisture barrier installed beneath the foundation beam system — a physical barrier between the ground and the structure that addresses the primary moisture intrusion vector for any grade-level accessory structure in the Ohio Valley climate.
Leveling System
Adjustable leveling system set to your site’s specific grade conditions during the build. Not shimmed with scrap lumber. Not assumed level from a satellite assessment. Assessed and leveled in person based on actual site conditions.
Floor Joists
2×6 pressure-treated floor joists at 16" on center with a double center beam. The 16" spacing and pressure-treated specification are closer to residential construction expectations than the lighter shed-market baseline.
Subfloor
3/4" 7-ply pressure-treated plywood — never OSB. This is not an upgrade. It is the standard on every structure, every series. The 7-ply pressure-treated plywood specification is what makes the floor assembly durable across decades.
Wall Framing
2×6 kiln-dried studs at 16" on center with interlocking double top plate throughout. Kiln-dried lumber improves dimensional stability, and the 2×6 depth supports stronger walls and future year-round-use upgrades.
Wall Sheathing
1/2" pressure-treated wall sheathing throughout — not standard untreated sheathing panel, not OSB. Pressure-treated sheathing adds moisture resistance at the wall plane, which matters in a humid climate.
Roof Structure
Custom-cut 2×6 rafters or steel-plated engineered trusses depending on configuration, with 6" overhangs, hurricane ties at rafter-to-plate connections, and 1/2" roof sheathing.
Roofline
Steeper Appalachian-style roof profiles — designed for drainage, visual character, and better interior volume than flatter shed profiles. The roofline is an architectural choice and a performance choice.
Windows
Operable windows where specified — not fixed decorative openings. Operable windows provide cross-ventilation, which helps manage moisture in enclosed backyard structures.
Siding
LP SmartSide® engineered wood siding or the specified exterior siding system — primed at the factory where applicable and requiring finish coating within 30 days of structural completion per warranty terms.
Gable Vents & Eaves
Gable vents and extended eaves where specified. The eave-and-vent system supports passive climate management and helps protect the exterior assembly from ground splash and moisture accumulation.
Dimensional Tolerance
Site-built dimensional tolerance applies because every structure is built in field conditions. Ed builds as closely as practical to the stated dimensions while accounting for material and site realities.
Named Materials · Not Generic Specs
Every Material Is Named.
None Are Left to Interpretation.
A build specification that says “pressure-treated lumber” without naming the actual role and standard leaves too much room for substitution. Ed’s Backyard Builds names materials wherever practical because named materials create accountability that generic descriptions do not.
Foundation
YellaWood® Pressure-Treated Grade Beams
YellaWood® pressure-treated beams are used for the foundation system. This is the ground-contact backbone of the structure and is not the place to economize with lighter material.
Subfloor
3/4" 7-Ply Pressure-Treated Plywood
Seven-ply pressure-treated plywood provides better stiffness, better fastener holding, and better moisture resistance than OSB in a ground-adjacent accessory structure.
Siding
LP SmartSide® Engineered Wood Siding
LP SmartSide® is a premium engineered wood siding option with strong long-term performance when properly installed and finished according to manufacturer requirements.
Roof Connections
Hurricane Ties at Roof Connections
Metal roof-to-wall connectors are installed where required by the structural approach. They help resist uplift forces generated by high-wind events.
Wall Framing
Kiln-Dried Dimensional Lumber
Kiln-dried framing improves dimensional stability and reduces the warping, checking, and twisting that can occur as green lumber dries in place.
Exterior Finish
Premium Exterior Finish — Homeowner Applied or Coordinated
The warranty requires compatible exterior paint or stain applied within 30 days. Ed specifies the appropriate product guidance at completion so the structure is protected correctly.
The Standard in Practice · What Ed Will and Will Not Do
Some Things Are Non-Negotiable.
Both Directions.
The build standard is not just a specification document. It is a set of commitments Ed makes on every project. Some things he will never do. Some things he always does. Both lists are worth knowing before you hire him.
Ed Will Never —
- Use OSB for subfloor, wall sheathing, or any structural application where Ed’s stated specification calls for plywood.
- Use 2×4 framing where 2×6 is specified as the build standard.
- Subcontract structural work such as foundation, framing, roofing, siding, windows, or doors.
- Skip proper roof-to-wall connection standards where they are part of the build specification.
- Advise a homeowner to skip a permit that is required.
- Request final payment before the completion walkthrough is conducted and unresolved items are addressed.
- Build a structure he is not confident the 30-year warranty can stand behind.
Ed Always —
- Visits every site in person before the proposal is written when the project is within service range and appears to be a fit.
- Delivers a written proposal with line-item pricing and explicit exclusions before commitment is required.
- States the 30-day sealing requirement verbally and in writing at the completion walkthrough.
- Delivers warranty documentation at the completion walkthrough.
- Documents change orders in writing before scope modifications proceed.
- Responds to warranty inquiries personally — there is no warranty service center or support-ticket system.
- Builds to the stated Ed’s Backyard Builds standard regardless of which series is selected.

You call or email Ed directly — the same number and email address shown throughout this site. There is no warranty service center, no third-party claims administrator, and no ticket system. Ed is the warranty contact.
Describe what you are observing, where it is located, and when you first noticed it. Ed will assess whether it falls within warranty coverage and arrange a next step. If the issue is covered, it is resolved. If it falls outside coverage, Ed explains why directly.

The warranty should be reviewed in the final written warranty document provided at completion. If transferability is important to you, ask Ed before signing so the terms are understood in writing.
Warranty documentation should be retained with your home records. If you sell the property, provide the documentation to the buyer so the structure’s build standard and warranty terms are clear.

This is a fair question. A warranty backed by a small business is only as good as the business behind it. Ed does not pretend otherwise.
The practical protection is the build standard itself. The materials and structural specifications are designed to perform without routine warranty service. The best warranty protection is a structure built well enough that you never need to use it.

The structural warranty covers Ed’s work. Modifications, additions, or repairs made by a third party after completion are outside the warranty scope and may void specific warranty provisions if they involve structural elements.
Interior finish work such as drywall, flooring, cabinetry, and lighting generally does not affect the structural warranty. Structural modifications — adding openings, removing framing members, altering the foundation system — are different. Contact Ed before proceeding with any post-completion structural change.

Call Ed directly as soon as you realize the window has passed. The practical priority is getting the exterior sealed as quickly as possible, regardless of warranty status.
Whether warranty coverage can be preserved depends on how long the surfaces were exposed and whether moisture damage occurred. Ed will assess the situation honestly. The most reliable path to full warranty protection is meeting the 30-day requirement from the beginning.
